What is Flutter?

Flutter is a software development toolkit used for simultaneously developing cross-platform applications for devices running Android and iOS. The technology was developed by Google and, by common consensus, in practice allows increasing speed, quality, and reducing the overall project cost.

The language Flutter is based on is Dart, which is an object-oriented, statically typed language. It goes without saying that Flutter has many advantages, but no technology is perfect. The following challenges should be considered when deciding whether native development is better for a particular project or whether to go with Flutter.

  • Flutter is still at a very early stage of development, so it's important to remember that some areas are still awaiting completion. 
  • Although the number of community-created extensions is impressive, they are not always well-written and should be double-checked before implementation.
  • Despite numerous advantages, embedding native views in Flutter is not without difficulties.
  • To write applications in Flutter, not only is knowledge of Dart required, but also having team members who understand Android and iOS.
  • Implementation can be complex because Flutter is an adapter, not a "native technology". Too advanced solutions will still use native tools, so Flutter may not be suitable for everyone.

Using Flutter is not a replacement for native app development but rather complements cross-platform solutions. Alibaba integrates Flutter into their native apps to provide the best user experience.

Hybrid App: Groupon

Groupon, another example of a company with an existing app, chose to integrate Flutter into the existing system rather than building it from scratch. 

Groupon decided to build two types of apps in Flutter—one for customers and one for merchants.

Philips Hue is a smart home lighting system and accessories for customers wanting intelligent lighting. The Hue Sync and Hue Bluetooth apps are built on Flutter. With these controllers, Philips customers can set the mood, change lighting colors, sync lights with multimedia devices, and quickly and easily control them via mobile devices.
